What does “lean manufacturing” mean? Lean manufacturing is a concept which got its start in Japan, and means manufacturing without waste. Some examples of types of waste being talked about would be excess material, excessive inventory, idle equipment (or people), excessive time to perform a function, and waiting time while that function is being performed.

It seems impossible to eliminate all waste, in fact it probably is, but insofar as the use of available resources is concerned, the amount of waste present can often be cut in half, if not by a factor of 3 in most factories. Waste is sometimes apparent (waiting time) but often is invisible. Often what is waste is simply regarded as “just the way things are, and always have been”. Furthermore, waste tends to be cumulative. The waste involved in one process affects other processes, creating more waste, and creating a snowball effect.

A great deal of waste is held in inventory. A solution to this is what is called the “kan-ban” approach, which is a “just in time” process. Just in time is not without risk of course, and can be difficult to implement. In fact one of the problems of implementing a “just in time “process” is that our thinking or mind set is more often than not one of “just in case”. Although we only need one widget per day, and receiving one per day will meet out needs, we’d better store a dozen of them – just in case. I recently took some time away from writing new blog posts to re-evaluate what I wanted my business to be about and how we would be of service to our clients. So, I took four months and did some soul-searching. As much as I loved connecting with readers on my blog and in my ezine, something seemed off center and I was determined to find out what it was and figure out how to fix it.

The first thing I did was to find a new coach – yes, coaches have coaches. I explained to her that my heart desire is to see women who want to start their own businesses get the help and guidance to do just that. In a very short time,Cheap True Religion Jeans, we were able to uncover together what my problem was: I am a heart-centered entrepreneur but I had planned and launched my business from a head-centered perspective.

What is a heart-centered entrepreneur? She (or he) is an individual whose main reason for being in business is that she wants to make a difference in peoples lives; she wants to be a catalyst for change; and, she wants to passionately pursue her purpose. On the other hand, head-centered entrepreneurs are solely driven by making money and everything they do – from choosing a target market, how they market, their sales process, etc. – has that as its only goal. Now mind you, I want my business to make money. If it does not, I really do not have a business.

For me the difference is that I believe in being authentic with those I want to serve. I want to build my business from that place. That means that I do not select my target market based on how much money I think I can make. I do not engage in marketing activities that feels “salesy.” I choose to remember every day that I am in business because I am passionate about my purpose which is to see women share their gifts with the world through entrepreneurship. I do have to know the “head stuff” about niches, target markets, marketing, sales, etc. but those things do not drive me and I will not allow them to drive my business, either.

There are lots of head-centered business owners who are quite successful at what they do and there is nothing wrong with that. I am just not one of them. Loyalty and Staying in Touch – How Treating Your C

There has been much written, especially these days, about the importance of staying in touch with your clients. It is critical, they say, to reach out on a consistent basis to remind your clients what you do and the value that your business provides for them. So true! But it can take a lot of time and effort, which many businesses don’t have the inclination to expend or discipline to do. So this got me thinking, if you were to treat your clients like you do your friends and family, and communicate accordingly, would that increase the importance of these activities for you…and help you to do a better job at staying in touch? Let’s take a closer look at some examples (consider the 2 items with the same number from each group below):

When Do You Reach Out to Friends & Family?
1. Anytime you think of them.
2. Holidays and other special occasions.
3. When something good has happened for you.
4. When something good has happened for them.
5. It’s been a long time and you’d like to catch up.
6. When something not so good has happened for you.
7. When something not so good has happened for them.
8. When they call or write you.
9. When you think you may have done something to upset them.

And now, Why Not Do the Same with Clients?
1. Now is a great time. Don’t delay. Just pick up the phone and do it.
2. Call or send a personal note to show you’re thinking about them and appreciate them.
3. Launched a new product? Added a new service? Let them know about it and how it can help them.
4. Let them know that you appreciate having clients who work hard to get results and are successful.
5. Feeling guilty about not being in touch? The longer you wait, the less they will care about you.
6. Speak openly with them about the efforts you are making to get it right and to be even better in the future.
7. Empathize with them and let them know you care. Ask them if there is any way that you can help.
8. If you can’t take their call right then, then always follow up quickly. Show you care that they took the time to reach out to you.
9. If you suspect they’re unhappy with you, don’t run from the storm, turn into it. This is a great opportunity to show your stuff and make things right.

The bottom line is that there is never a bad time to reach out to your clients…and never a good enough excuse not to. Clients pay your bills, fund your paychecks, and keep you in business. Peter Drucker said that “The function of business is to attract and maintain customers.” Period. If that’s not reason enough to treat your clients like family and friends, I don’t know what is!

7. Sympathize with them, let them know you care. Q. Is there any way they can help you.
8. If you can not put their phones on time, and always quick to follow up. Express your concern, they take the time to contact you.
9. If you suspect they are unhappy with you, do not run from the storm, to open it. This is a good opportunity to show you something, so all of the rights.

The bottom line is never a bad time to reach your customers … and never a good enough reason not to do so. Customers to pay bills, fund the salary, and keep your business.
